Te Puke Primary School

The Ground
Te Puke Primary School and its surrounds are rich in cultural narrative and history. Built on a foundation of creating opportunities, the school is committed to providing a learning environment that is both safe and nurturing, where students can thrive and achieve their personal best.

Embracing a diverse student and whanau community, the School wanted an engaging and challenging new play space that paired cultural significance with physical development for tamariki of all ages to enjoy.

The Creation
Playground Creations’ design of Te Puke Primary School’s space used key equipment to create unique play settings that enhanced the School’s cultural elements.

Korero Circle - a special area designed for sitting and conversing. This circle of natural logs also serves as a space for balanced activities and social play, encouraging children to engage in meaningful conversations while enjoying the outdoors.

Tuna /Jungle Ropes – creating a connecting to the region’s local heritage, the Tuna/Jungle ropes symbolise the tuna (eel). These ropes provide a challenging and fun element for climbing and balance, helping to develop children's physical skills and strength.

Hinaki Trail/ Vortex nets – this trail links the area with natural rocks, creating a pathway that represents traditional eel fishing techniques. This trail not only offers a tactile walking experience but also connects children to an important aspect of the community’s cultural heritage.

Waka Seesaw – designed to resemble a traditional canoe, this seesaw provides a fun, interactive experience while teaching children about navigation and exploration.

Poured Rubber Spheres – scattered throughout the playground are poured rubber spheres designed for jumping, hopping, and sitting. These spheres offer versatile play opportunities, helping to develop agility and coordination in a safe environment.

Wharenui – a key feature of the playground is the Wharenui, a structure resembling a traditional meeting house. This element serves as a gathering point, fostering a sense of community and connection among the children.

Matariki Stacker Logs and Other Natural Elements – the playground also includes Matariki Stacker Logs and other natural elements, inviting children to explore, stack, and balance. These features celebrate the Matariki stars and encourage imaginative play and physical activity.

The Play
The playground not only reflects the rich cultural heritage of the region’s local Iwi but also celebrates the diverse cultures represented at Te Puke Primary School. Each element is thoughtfully designed to blend play with cultural significance, fostering an environment where all children can connect with their heritage while developing essential physical and social skills.

“Our experience when dealing with playground creations was very seamless. They listened to our ideas and suggested wonderful alternatives to help create a space that our tamariki love.”
