Tirau Primary School
The Ground
Tirau, dubbed the ‘Corrugated Capital of the World’, is home to the iconic Big Dog corrugated iron Visitor Centre and neighbouring corrugated iron Big Sheep. It was therefore no surprise that when Tirau Primary School were planning the design and construction of a new playground, corrugated iron would feature!
Made possible by a generous donation from the Tirau Lions Club – $50,000 to celebrate the Club’s 50th anniversary – the playground was also financially supported by the Lion Foundation, Morgan Trust, and many other local businesses.
The Creation
Tamariki from the local primary school were excited at the prospect of a new playground but wanted to ensure some of their favourite parts of the existing play space were kept. This included the big fort and slides. Our team welcomed the design challenge, incorporating a large, corrugated bridge linking the two fort areas… with corrugated roofs of course!
The design also featured a range of play equipment including spinning wheels, climbing ropes, and rock walls for strength and agility; slides and swings; stepping poles and wooden planks for balance; and social space encouraging collaborative play.
The Play
Tirau Primary School’s new play space is more than a school playground; it’s an asset brought to life with support from the local community and the Playground Creations team had the privilege of designing, manufacturing, and installing all equipment.
Natural materials used throughout the space pay homage to the rural landscape with pops of colourful equipment igniting the magic of play every day for the whole school to enjoy.
