Whitianga Playground on The Esplanade
Project: Whitianga Playground on The Esplanade
Client: Thames Coromandel District Council
The Ground
When Thames Coromandel District Council (TCDC) embarked on a two-stage upgrade to Whitianga Town Centre, transforming the playscape along the waterfront area in the Esplanade Reserve was one of the major priorities.
TCDC and Boffa Miskell Tauranga worked alongside Playground Creations to create a vibrant play space with a nautical theme.
The Creation
Three related sections of the playground accommodate play for different ages, all encompassed within a mini scooter track that circumnavigates the perimeter.
A sand play zone with a commanding wooden boat, complete with helm and telescope, evokes memories of HMS Buffalo, the wreck site of which lies a mere 50m off Buffalo Beach.
The main play zone contains a large customised multi-play unit with slide and platforms; see-saw; in-ground trampoline; several types of swings; a supernova spinner and a large net climber.
The third section is a water play zone with water troughs, dispensers and a water channel with gates.
The Play
The use of different textures throughout the playground provides exciting elements that reflect the seaside theme.
The destination playground, opened mid-2019, is extensively used by all ages.
